She Wished

As a child she wished for a Prince,

Her own castle, ponies, fairies and to be free.

They told her it would come in time.

As a adolescent she wished for a boyfriend,

Her own house, to be beautiful, to be free.

They told her it would come in time.

As an adult she wished for a different husband,

To be alone in her house, to look young again, to be free from responsibility.

They told her it would come in time.

As an old woman she wished for her husband back,

For laughter in that house, for someone to come back who thought she was beautiful.

The freedom she had wanted was lonely.

And though it had come, she missed what she had never wanted.
